Required Summer Reading for 2008 - School Starts Tuesday, September 2nd 2008

If you are not sure which English class you will be taking this fall, please call the school at 415-564-1063. Students enrolling late in the summer should discuss with a school representative what their requirement will be.

All assignments related to this summer reading will form half of a student’s English grade for the first 4-week grading period.

Incoming Freshmen and Sophomores

Read one of the following:

1. Native Son by Richard Wright. Published in 1940, Native Son is the story of a 20-year-old African-American who accidentally kills a white woman.  It is one of the first novels dealing with the hardships of the African-American experience and has been considered a literary classic since its release. There are some scenes of violence, at least one of sexual violence. About 400 pages.

 2. 1984 by George Orwell. Published in 1949, 1984 is a science fiction story about a world where everything is controlled by a supposedly benevolent ruler called “Big Brother.”  Winston Smith, the novel’s hero, decides to rebel against “Big Brother.” 1984 is one of the literary classics of the twentieth century. About 300 pages. 

3. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. Published in 2004, Prep is the story of an Indiana girl who goes to an elite Boston boarding school. Although not a literary classic, Prep got great reviews and was very popular. It is a comedy-drama. Prep   contains some sexual content. About 400 pages.

Please purchase books early. You may experience difficulty finding them if you wait until the last week (not to mention that they are not short books). Amazon.com carries all titles, as do most local bookstores.

Be sure to read carefully and take notes.  There will be a test on the material during the first week of school.

Seniors must also research colleges that they are considering, and bring in the application (with the essay question) on the FIRST DAY of school.  A minimum of three applications is required.  We will be working on college essays upon your return from summer.
