The W.I.S Chinese Program (the program) is in cooperation with Woodside International School. The program's supervisor is Mr. John S. Edwards, headmaster and founder of W.I.S., and the program's director is Ms. Cindy Lam. The goals and ideals of the program are to spread, promote, and extend Chinese culture, to commit to advancing community service for Chinese families in the Sunset District of San Francisco, and to educate its students to become well rounded citizens.
Our program was formed in 1995. The curriculum emphasizes listening to, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese (Cantonese). The program provides a cultural education including many diverse Chinese activities. The classes now offered range from kindergarten through sixth grade. The program is in the process of extending its curriculum to include middle school levels and is also establishing a Mandarin program.
The academic year starts on the first Saturday in September every year and ends on the third Saturday in June of the following year. Instruction begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon every Saturday morning. Students may arrive at the school five minutes before instruction starts, but cannot stay more than 10 minutes after instruction ends. There are two semesters in one academic year, September to January, and February to June, a combined total of 10 months. The program will observe about three school holidays when classes will not be held. Please refer to the school calendar or speak to a school instructor for full details.
